Conference

Sanctities. Constructions, Functions and Transfer of Conceptions of Sanctity in the European Early and High Middle Ages

Date: 27-29 October 2016

The conference will approach the question of conceptions of sanctity on three levels: (1) The constructions of sanctity and saints, (2) the functions and use of these constructions and depictions of sanctity and saints, and finally (3) the transfer of conceptions of sanctity across Europe. It is the aim of the conference to study strategies for the construction of sanctity and models for the depiction of saints from historical, linguistic and literary perspectives.

When discussing the various functions and uses of saints’ lives we shall also have occasion to examine transfer processes of conceptions of sanctity in European Early and High Middle Ages. By connecting these levels, which are still too often treated separately, the conference aims at exploring the dynamics and diversity of sanctity conceptions in the Middle Ages.
