Academic Résumé
Born in 1952 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, he studied Chemistry, History and German Philology in Saarbrücken, Gießen and Mannheim. From 1980 to 1981 research assistant at Generallandesarchiv in Karlsruhe, from 1981 to March 1996 research assistant, assistant lecturer and finally Akademischer Rat at Universität-Gesamthochschule Siegen. In winter term and summer term 1994/95 he taught as an interim professor at Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Since April 1st 1996 chair of Economic and Social History in Kiel. Since June 1st 2008 he serves as President of Christian-Albrecht-Universität zu Kiel. In October of 2013, he received the Honory Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (Dr. h.c.) from the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada.
Interests:
Economic and Social History of the Late Middle Ages (13th-16th century), especially Social History of the medieval church, Constitutional and Economic History of the German principalities, the culture of townspeople and nobility (nourishment, living, festivities, family), the Social History of Work and Environmental History (urbanization and “Stadthygiene”/ hygiene in medieval towns, town and forest etc.).
